Excellent Engineers: An Inside Look into Haverford’s Robotics Team

Like many high schools, Haverford is known for its fantastic athletics and arts programs, but science programs are often overlooked. However, that’s not to say that science programs, like robotics, aren’t fantastic as well.

Haverford’s robotics team, Roboforce, are second-time qualifiers of a district event, champions of the 2023 Mount Olive district event, and repeated award winners–yet they are hardly recognized by the school. Many Robotics team members stated that they receive funding from many sponsors, but very little from Haverford High School itself. Most students know the robotics team exists, but don’t know where they work and the extent of their accomplishments.

With that being said, Roboforce qualified for this year’s 2024 Bensalem District Event, a FIRST robotics competition (FRC).

The FIRST acronym means For Inspiration and Recognition of Science and Technology. This non-profit organization emphasizes sportsmanship, inclusion, teamwork, gracious professionalism, and the impact of STEM programs on youth, all while having fun. One of their greatest missions is to create a culture in which sciences and technology are celebrated in all workplaces and generations.

Although FRC is centralized on competition, it’s the experience and connections between teammates that last far longer than a blue banner and a medal. Ethan Dorsey, junior and co-captain of Roboforce, labeled the competition experience as “so fun. Even if you’re sitting and watching matches it’s fun.” He was also impressed by the great relationships between other teams and the strikingly positive atmosphere of it all.

There are several takeaways from Roboforce, but the most important one is that the robotics team of Haverford High is a loving community. Made up of various grades and personalities, Roboforce is inclusive and diverse. As Dorsey said, “If I wasn’t in this club, I wouldn’t have made the friends that I have.”

All should join Haverford’s Robotics team if they’re in search of a great, tight-knit community of STEM-loving students. Take Henry, the robotic Ford that frequently participates in Haverford Pep Rallies. If you enjoy watching that, why not partake in it? Captain of Roboforce and senior Justin Baylis puts it simply: “Our team is awesome sauce.”

Congratulations to Roboforce for their qualifying efforts at the 2024 Bensalem District Event, and all accomplishments to come!
