The Fords’ Softball team kicked off the season this week with a triumphant pair of games. First was a win on Tuesday, destroying Conestoga 12 to 7. Senior Emma Taylor, one of the Captains, pitched phenomenally in the frigid cold, preventing Conestoga from retaking the lead. All around, the team played well on the field.  In addition, there were many hits including doubles and triples, but the highlight of the game was an out-of-the-park home run by Sophomore Anabelle Knese. Using that as motivation, the team brought extra energy into yesterday’s game versus Ridley.

Ridley took an early lead, but the Fords quickly struck back to tie it up. The game remained tied and close through four innings, a reminder of last year’s Central League Championship, where the girls tied Ridley for the Central League title. But things sparked for the Fords in the bottom of the fifth, and they took the lead 5-1 with two RBIs by Knese and Senior Kerri McCallum.

Ridley never managed to retake Haverford’s lead, and the Fords fielding was too much for the Raiders. Haverford claimed a 5-1 victory over their rivals.

After the game, Girls’ Softball Coach Bob Newman said, “We knew that Ridley was going to be a tough team. They jumped at us from the start, but the girls were motivated and came right back and won.” He added, “They’re a really fun and energetic team, and I’m lucky to be coaching them.”

If the rest of the season is anything like these first two games, it will be another fun and energetic trip back to Central Leagues Championships.

The Girls Softball team will take on Garnet Valley next Monday at the Haverford Reserve. Show up and support the Fords!
