After a weekend full of outstanding performances, “Grease” is definitely the word at Haverford High school. With “full houses” Friday and Saturday night, as well as Sunday afternoon, this marks one of the most well-attended shows in the Drama Club’s history.
Grease follows the well-known love story of Danny Zuko and the Thunder Birds, and Sandy Dumbrowski and the Pink Ladies. The production featured songs from the movie like “Grease is the Word”, “Summer Nights”, “Born to Hand Jive”, and “We Go Together”. These songs featured the whole cast, including the array of ensemble members as both featured singers and dancers. Since this play had such a large cast, their were many people throughout the stage and in the pit either dancing or adding back-up vocals.
The parts of Danny Zuko and Sandy Dumbrowski were portrayed by Drama Club seniors Ian Anstee and Hannah Billbrough, respectively. Their solo songs included “Sandy” and duet “Hopelessly Devoted to You”. Other seniors putting on their last performances included Remi Segal, Justin Strupczewski, Lizzie Freilich, Kat Corbino, and Andrew DePaul.
Other standouts include underclassmen Jake DeWerth-Jaffe, Scott Berkowitz, Issy Swantak, and Tess Mallon. DeWerth-Jaffe portrayed the most famous “mooner” in all of Rydell High, Roger, and performed one of the most popular songs of the night “Mooning”, a duet with Jan (Corbino).
Although there were many big parts within the Thunder Birds and Pink Ladies, Grease is widely known as an ensemble performance. With a cast of over 60 actors and actresses, the sheer number of actors made the show more fun and lively.
Lastly, the set was an impressive aspect of the production as a whole. Even the band was elevated and on the stage-different from any other musical at Haverford. Set changes went much smoother because there were fewer larger set pieces less to move on and off of the stage after scenes. There were some technical difficulties with the microphones, but that is just one part of live performance that is unavoidable.
Overall, the Drama Club put on an unforgettable performances with some amazing talents and an energetic ensemble.
