This weekend, Haverford Drama Club will be putting on a production of the classic musical Grease. They will be performing four shows including opening night this Friday, March 21, two on Saturday and a matinee on Sunday.
Grease originally started as a Broadway production in Chicago in 1971. After much popularity onstage, the musical was turned into a movie with a cast including John Travolta, Olivia Newton-John, and Jeff Conaway. This made the show a hit and turned it into a production performed throughout the whole country.
Since there are two versions of the show, Haverford’s production will be a combination of each. Some songs that were only featured in the movie such as, “You’re the One that I Want”, did not appear in the original play, but were later added to this production as extras. Some songs that are only in the play will be in this production also, including “Freddy My Love” and “Those Magic Changes”.
According to director Heidi Uribe, Grease is the largest production that Haverford Drama Club has ever put on, with a cast of over sixty students. The cast is so large that in some songs, students can’t fit on the stage at once and have been moved down to the pit. This is usually where the orchestra plays, but for this show, they have moved up to the stage.
This Wednesday and Thursday, a homeroom preview will be held for both grades to enjoy a preview of the musical. On Friday, the musical opens for the public. For more on tickets and showtimes click here.
