There’s no denying that, for Haverford High School, one of the biggest sports next to football is basketball. The Varsity Lady Fords Basketball team showed us the reason why this season. Every year, the Fords work hard and play even harder. This season marked the best they have had since they were Central League Champs back in 2012. The Fords fought hard this and made it to round one of the 2013 District playoffs.
This year’s squad benefitted from the experience of seven seniors – Erin Burke, Meghan Farrell, Brittany Fowler, Meghan Fowler, Samantha Estes, Kyndall Hawkins, and Kelly Rogers. Two key additions this year were transfer students from Archbishop Prendergast, junior Rosie O’Halloran and sophomore Mollie Reynolds. The Fords won with good defense, solid play-making, and great outside shooting, with particularly good three-point shooters in Rosie O’Halloran and Meghan Fowler.
Starting off strong with a three game winning streak, the team continued to have success throughout the season, finishing 14-7 and making it to Districts. The Lady Fords had some tough games throughout the season, a few being their matchups with Garnet Valley, Ridley, and Conestoga. Garnet Valley remained undefeated in the league, but the Fords gave them a tough match-up both times they faced them, only losing by a few points. The Fords battled the whole game and just fell short by two points both times. The biggest game of the season was the last Central League game against Conestoga. The Fords came out and battled back and forth with the Pioneers the whole game. Haverford came out on top by a score of 24-22. This victory tied Conestoga and Haverford for fifth place in the league and guaranteed the Fords a spot in District playoffs.
“I’m so proud of my team. After a rebuilding season last year, the returners and incoming players help set the foundation for a successful, winning season. Although we will lose many key members of our team, I feel that their hard work and dedication have raised the bar for the future of the girls’ program,” commented Coach Bridget DiCave.
The JV Lady Fords’ season came to a close with a 6-14 record. Coach Walter was proud of how hard his team played this season and expressed this by saying, “Our team played hard every game. It was a lot of fun seeing the players develop as individuals and a team. Each player contributed to the team effort every day with their hard work, commitment, and selflessness.” Congratulations to both teams on great seasons!
