The recently released Star Wars: Skeleton Crew is a playful, yet dramatic coming-of-age story appropriate for casual watchers and superfans alike. Created by Christopher Ford and Jon Watts, the story takes place during a similar time period as The Mandalorian and follows four children from the planet At Attin who get lost in the galaxy and are desperate for a way home. Little do they know, not everyone is as friendly as those from their home planet, and there is more to At Attin than meets the eye.
The show stars Ryan Kiera Armstrong as Fern, Kyriana Kratter as KB, Robert Timothy Smith as Neel, Ravi Cabot-Conyers as Wim, Nick Frost as the voice of droid SM 33, and Jude Law as the elusive Jod Na Nawood. The acting is generally admirable with only a few not-so-believable moments, and the special effects and artistry are superb, as expected. Star Wars: Skeleton Crew received a 91% on Rotten Tomatoes and an IMDb rating of 7.2/10.
Though this series is only one season long, each of the eight 40-minute episodes is worth watching. Speaking as a casual fan, the plot was easy to follow, and there were no obscure references that hindered my understanding. However, there were still plenty of Easter Eggs for the more Star Wars-obsessed audience. Each episode was jam-packed with adventure and suspense, and the constant cliffhangers left me dying for more. I started watching in late December, and I binged all four released episodes in one night.
It felt like I was right there with the four heroes as they fought off the evils of the galaxy. This series is extremely relatable with simultaneous themes of homesickness and drive for adventure, along with strained friendships. The age of the main characters adds a valuable aspect to the show as well that is not seen in other Star Wars films. Childish naivete and villains are as equal hindrances as final exams for the four protagonists.
Although the final episode ended predictably, and nothing will ever beat the originals, Skeleton Crew was an incredibly enjoyable watch filled with action, adventure, and relatable familial relationships. It is uncertain if there will be a season two, but this show deserves one. In the meantime, you can stream this series on Disney+.
