Most people who live in Philadelphia know that the Phillies lost the 4th and final game in the National League Division Series against the New York Mets on October 9th, ending their 2024 baseball season. The Phils had a great start to the year, placing number one in the league. Before the All-Star break, their record was 62-34, an incredible record for the first half of the season. This year, the team had eight players in the All-Star Game, three were position players, while the rest were pitchers.Â
First baseman Bryce Harper seemed to be getting very comfortable at-bat, having 91 hits, 21 home runs, 61 RBIs, and 56 runs scored during the regular season. In the final game against the Mets, Harper hit a double and later in the inning scored the only run in the game for the Phils. His position at first base has been one of the best in-field changes since Harper joined the team. He is fast and quick with his catches and throws. Harper has been an asset to the team these past few years.Â
Along with Harper, Nick Castellanos has been a crucial player on the team this postseason. Batting with an average of .412, Castellanos has had many crucial hits, culminating with a walk-off single to win the second playoff game. Last season, Alec Bohm was one of our star players, having 153 hits and 97 RBIs. This year, he wasn’t hitting as well, with his average a meager .280. This was very disappointing to all the fans and players. Even with that disappointment, the Phillies ended the regular season with an impressive 95-67 record.Â
Fast forward two months to Red October to find thousands of devastated fans trying to recover from the Phillies playoff loss to their rivals, the New York Mets, 3 games to 1. The series against the New York Mets was exciting, with each team taking the lead almost every inning. However, the Phils couldn’t seem to get their bats to make contact with the ball. The series ended in a 1-3 loss record for the Phillies.Â
Being a Philadelphia Phillies fan is like being on a rollercoaster; you never see what’s ahead. One second you’re happy and excited and the next you’re screaming at the top of your lungs in anguish. I have been to many games this season and in my lifetime. The energy is something I’ve never felt before. Whether it was the 1st or the 9th inning, every fan was standing and cheering; the atmosphere felt electric. However during the last game, most fans lost hope very early in the game. The Mets scored 4 runs in the bottom of the 6th, leaving the Phillies nervous and on edge. While the 2024 season ended in favor of the Mets, Phillies fans can’t help but look forward to the beginning of spring training on February 22, 2025, when the Phils will have another chance at success.
