In addition to the upcoming United States Presidential Election, there is another election going on inside Haverford High School. Within History teacher Charles Withers’ classroom, a mock election is occurring between two men: Nicholas Petrucci, assigned as a Republican, and Wade DeVitis, assigned as a Democrat. On Friday, October 4th, they will hold their national conventions to speak on the issues and deliver their messages to the people of Haverford High School. In an in-depth interview, both candidates described where they stood on the issues.
On the issue of education, DeVitis stands for a strong public education system across the country, “. . .so that areas of the country that are not as privileged as others can reduce the achievement gap and give everyone a chance to succeed.” When DeVitis was asked about foreign policy, he shared the views of his fellow Democrats in supporting Ukraine. In regards to the Israel-Palestine conflict, DeVitis supports Israel’s right to defend itself but stated that they (Israel) should not have overstepped, such as in the case of Lebanon. Although DeVitis was accused of having a net worth of around $100 million and, despite that, had paid little tax on it, he stated “With my net worth upwards of $100 million, I shouldn’t be paying middle-class taxes, and that’s why I’m here. I didn’t impose those taxes. I’m here because I want to change that.”
When Petrucci was asked about his scandal involving not tipping his waiters and waitresses, he attacked those who planned to attack him, stating “I know there will be attacks coming. I’m ready to face them head-on. My opponents are infinitely worse because they have a bunch of money that they don’t pay taxes on.” On the issue of abortion, Petrucci stated his position is “very moderate” and “considers the issue from both sides.” In terms of something substantive, he believes that abortion should be allowed until 6 months. Now, this position isn’t one usually heard from other Republicans across the country. On the issue of education, Petrucci talked about “the government taking a step back.”
Both campaigns have been seeking endorsements from teachers and staff members. The candidates see these endorsements as important to win over the voter base of Meghan Roberts’ 9th grade American History class in this election. The campaigns have also created video advertisements showing where the candidates stand on key issues. Only time will tell if Petrucci or DeVitis will win in this campaign.
