Top 5 Halloween Candies

Sure, Halloween can mean a lot of different things for people. For some, it’s a chance to get wild and dress up as their favorite superhero. For others, it’s the opportunity to either a. scare the bejeezus out of someone or b. have the bejeezus scared out of them at area “scare-fest” attractions. The commonality between all Halloween enthusiasts, however, comes down to one thing: candy.

According to the New York Post, this year’s Halloween candy sales are expected to top $2.5 billion across the US. It’s pretty clear that we, Americans like our candy. So, in case you’re getting ready to go out to buy candy for the trick-or-treaters or even just looking to indulge in some sugary goodness yourself, we have compiled a list of the  top five best Halloween candies to buy this year. If you disagree, we’d love to hear your thoughts in the comments section

5. Skittles
Skittles-original-ic-127267Made by Wrigley, Skittle are frequently overlooked, but they should be considered as a clear rival to Hershey’s M&M’s. Chewy, crunchy, and full of a blast of flavor, their only downfall is that they don’t have much difference in flavor between the colors. But who cares? They pack the sugary punch that every trick-or-treater is looking for.  Haverford student Luke Hall considers Skittles “the epitome of candy.” I agree.

4. Hershey’s Milk Chocolate Bars
hershey-bars-milk-chocolate_lgFounded in 1894, Hershey’s is the grandfather of candy, and they still don’t disappoint. This original makes it on here because it is just that: the original. It’s worthy of a little respect, so I place it at number four on the list even though some of the newcomers now outshine it for candy status. Who doesn’t like a Hershey bar, though?

3. Snickers
snickers_wrappedA nougat topped with caramel and peanuts and then enrobed in milk chocolate can never be wrong.  It was created in 1930, being named after the company’s favorite horse. It holds up its own against the other candy bars of today because of its genius combination of crunch, chewy, ooey insides, and a rich, chocolate outer layer. It’s a perfect little gift wrapped up in chocolate.

2. Reese’s Peanut Butter Cups
am_reeses_cup_robbery_lpl_120620_wblogAccording to USA Today,  in 2013, Reeses peanut butter cups sold just under $510 million, knocking M&Ms out of the top spot for most popular candy in the United States. I have to disagree with the public here. While I don’t want to take anything away from Reeses, I think they just miss their mark because that outer layer of chocolate inevitably gets smushed into the wrapper and ends up getting stuck inside. It’s a process to be able to enjoy them after a long night of tricks. Their flavor is not able to be duplicated by the many copy-cat companies that try, and it’s that flavor that takes them to number two on the list.

1. M&M’s.
30137Created by Mars Inc., M&M’s are indeed the best Halloween candy ever. They consist of milk chocolate surrounded by a hard, candy shell with a lowercase “m” printed on each individual piece. There are so many options: peanut, pretzel, mint chocolate. They even make red velvet and birthday cake flavored M&M’s. With such a variety, it’s still the original form that takes the cake. They advertise that they’ll “melt in your mouth, not in your hand,” but I wouldn’t even care if they melted in my hand. They’re that good.

With all the options on this list and the millions more that didn’t make the cut, it could be really easy to gorge yourself on candy this year and every year. But remember to eat safely, guys. Give these candies the respect that they deserve.
