Amidst consideration that suburban Philadelphia voters might be pivotal to the success of candidates in next month’s Presidential election, democratic Presidential candidate, Hillary Clinton, held a town hall event at the Haverford Community Recreation Center on October 4th.  Alongside Penn alumna and actress, Elizabeth Banks, and her daughter Chelsea, Clinton hosted a number of local residents who came out to show their support.

Families arrived at the Rec Center as early as 8 o’clock for a chance to see the democratic candidate in their hometown. Throughout the event, energy was high and most attendees left feeling that the wait was worth it, among them many Haverford High School students.

“The atmosphere inside the rally was awesome. You could tell everyone wanted to be there, and genuinely supported Hillary’s campaign.” Haverford senior, Natalie Woodman, said.

Clinton answered several questions, all pertaining to her agenda to support children and families. Topics ranged from gun laws to reducing college debt, but many believe that most powerful answer came when a 15-year-old girl brought up the topic of body image.

“At my school, body image is a really big issue for girls my age. I see with my own eyes the damage Donald Trump does when he talks about women and how they look. As the first female president, how would you undo some of that damage and help girls understand that they are so much more than what they look like?” the girl asked.

Clinton’s response highlighted that the problem stems from media influence that tells women that they must look and act a certain way. She also addressed comments that Donald Trump made about a Miss Universe winner and advised people to ignore this bullying.

Jack Feder, another senior here at Haverford, had the opportunity to meet Clinton after the event.

“Since this is the first election in which I will be able to vote, it was important to me to hear the candidates speak about issues that matter to me, such as when she was asked about college debt. At the end, I was able to express my own views to her while sustaining a firm handshake, which she intently listened to, and allowed me to grab a pic.”

Politicians frequently visit Philadelphia, but rarely make campaign stops in the surrounding suburbs. Delaware County has voted Republican in the past, but the general consensus seems to be that the community might be changing, and this event was a chance to sway undecided voters to Clinton’s side. The event was certainly a once in a lifetime experience, but if you missed it, videos are available on Hillary Clinton’s Facebook page.

The election is just around the corner and both parties are concerned with getting people registered to vote. For those of you who can, get out and vote on November 8 because the future of our country is at stake and every vote can make a difference.
